The Winter Gardens glittered for the Midwinter Dance, with paper snowflakes overhead and couples waltzing until their feet ached. Mr. Whitby, a blackmailer, arrived uninvited in his best bow tie, carrying a little black notebook he never let anyone read. Long before the last waltz, Mr. Whitby was found dead.
